Vacancy Short Description : Fantastic opportunity for a young person to work alongside the owner and creator of Green Island Gardens, Fiona Edmond; learning all aspects of maintaining a 20 acre garden that is open to the public as well as running a nursery.
Qualifications Required : Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to a thorough initial assessment to establish course suitability. Ideally applicants should have at least 4 GCSEs including English and maths at grades 9- 4 for a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship and 9-3 for a Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship.
Proof of qualifications will be required before you can be accepted onto the apprenticeship.
PLEASE NOTE: All applicants will be emailed an Initial Assessment to complete as part of the recruitment procedure. This is an online assessment in English and maths and can be completed at your preferred location remotely. Currently, due to COVID19 we are not usually offering Initial Assessment appointments at either campus.
Those without the stated entry requirements or awaiting GCSE/GCSE retake grades, will be offered further advice and guidance to support their application and may be invited into one of the campuses to complete the assessments on site.
Vacancy Full Description : The apprentice will work alongside garden designer /owner learning all aspects of maintenance of a large garden open to the public including operating machinery such as hedge trimmer, strimmer, tractor and trailer and variety of ride on mowers.
Maintenance of woodland gardens, main beds, gravel garden, vegetable garden and water gardens included, as well growing nursery stock in poly tunnels.

Future Prospects : Full time position as gardener at Green Island Gardens
Training to be Provided : Training for all job specific tasks will be given in the worklpace.
There is potential for a chain saw course for a suitable applicant.
Garden Design training.
The apprentice will need to attend any courses that run at the gardens…see website for details. In addition the apprentice will have the support and guidance of a qualified assessor from the college, who will make on-site visits every 6-8 weeks

Pay Rates: The stated weekly pay of £124.50 per week is based on 30 hours per week for the current apprentice wage - this will increase subject to the number of hours worked. The current NMW rate for Apprentices is £4.15 per hour with effect from 1st April 2020. This applies to 16-18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. Apprentices need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in the industry with a contract of employment
