Qualifications Required : Entry onto the apprenticeship is subject to a thorough initial assessment to establish course suitability. Applicants should have at least 4 GCSEs including English and Maths at grades A-C or 9- 4. Apprentices need to be employed for minimum of 30 hours a week in the industry with a contract of employment.
Proof of qualifications will be required before you can be accepted onto the apprenticeship.
PLEASE NOTE: Those without the stated entry requirements or awaiting GCSE/GCSE retake grades, may be offered an appointment to come into college (Easton or Otley campus) and sit an online assessment to confirm program suitability.
Vacancy Full Description : An apprentice Gardener is required to assist in looking after an enchanting and tranquil waterside and woodland 7-acre garden. You will work alongside 3 full time gardeners and a team of volunteers to look after a collection of rare and unusual plants.
The garden is open to the public and private groups throughout the summer, therefore you will be part of the team ensuring it is maintained to extremely high standards.
The successful applicant will learn and undertake a range of gardening tasks in the upkeep and care of Fullers Mill Garden.

Horticultural Duties:
To learn and undertake daily and seasonal gardening tasks to an exceptional high standard, under the general direction of the Head Gardener, including but not limited to:
• Pruning – pruning of trees shrubs using the correct horticultural methods
• General garden maintenance – maintaining paths, leaf clearing, tidying and weeding.
• Propagation/seed sowing – Using various propagation techniques to increase both garden and nursery stock
• Plant husbandry – Watering, pest and disease control and glasshouse house management
• Lawn care – Mowing, feeding and seeding.
• Nursery work – Re-stocking plant sales, re-potting and ensuring plant are of the highest quality for the Garden and nursery.
• Planting – Both Tree, shrub and perennial layers.
• Plant knowledge – Learning the plants in the garden and beyond

Operational Duties
To support the opening of the garden, including dealing with and helping the public.

To support other activities taking place in the garden e.g. volunteering, special events etc. by good teamwork and willingness to undertake practical tasks associated with those activities

To adhere to all relevant policies i.e. those relating to Health and Safety at all times

To undertake other duties within the broad scope of the job as may be required by the line manager once adequate training has been given

To undertake occasional weekend and evening work during the garden open season.

Working Week : 37.5 Mon to Fri from 8.30 to 4.30 including a 30min lunch break.
Salary : £146.25 Per Week

College attendance: NONE
Training for all job specific tasks will be given. In addition the apprentice will have the support and guidance of a qualified assessor from the college, who will make on-site visits every 6-8 weeks. There may be the occasional need to attend either the Otley or Easton campus for short training courses and tests.
Other Information : Pay Rates: The current NMW rate for Apprentices is £3.90 per hour with effect from 1st April 2019. This applies to 16-18 year old Apprentices and those aged 19 and over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other Apprentices the Apprentice National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The wage for Apprentices applies to both time spent on the job plus time spent in training. 37.5 hours per week, any additional hours worked e.g. during summer opening would be taken off as time off in lieu.
